Sir:-
Pt 12 SEP 34,
As an indication of the sentiments with which
the European population of Hong Kong view any dis-
position to consult Chinese feeling or prejudice
in the treatment of plague patients, I have the
honour to inclose an extract from the "China Mail *
of the 25th instant. The occasion for this out-
burst was the telegram which you addressed to the
Governor a few days ago, in which you stated that
the Chinese Government was very anxious respecting
the state of public feeling at Canton, and would be
gratified if His Excellency would consult popular
prejudices as far as possible.
This telegram was communicated to me by the
Governor, and the public press also seems to have
been made acquainted with its tenour.
The tone of this article is quite in keeping
with the usual utterances of the public press. Any
